Calling all volunteers!
Dear Leal Families,
We all have one thing in common: we all love children who attend Leal school. We try to make the Leal experience one that will lay an educational pathway to success by building and maintaining a strong community of students, teachers, and families: a community that comes together in many different ways. The Leal PTA is one of the most successful ways in which we come together. We want to encourage you to join us in a way that works for you so that we can continue to provide cultural and academic enrichment for our School. You can contribute by volunteering for event organization, serving on a committee, or coming to meetings.
We provide free childcare and a light meal at meetings so that they are more family (and schedule) friendly. We meet most every month on the second Monday at 6:00. These meetings are held in the MPR (the school’s cafeteria), and start with a family dinner provided by the PTA. At 6:30 we start the meeting, which usually consists of upcoming events, discussion of new funding opportunities, and updates from Mr. Landsman and the staff about what’s going on at school.
If meetings are not convenient for you, but you are interested in helping out or getting to know others in the Leal community, consider volunteering to help with an upcoming event or joining one of our committees.
One of our biggest events in terms of fun and effort is the annual Fun Fair that takes place in May. This combination carnival, silent auction, and bake sale takes a lot of effort and many pairs of hands to put on. We’re hoping to enlist a committee of parents to take on the task of organizing the event. Don’t Panic! We have many parents with experience, so if you’re new to Leal, you will have lots of folks around you eager to help you learn and to welcome you to the team.
Another opportunity to help is the organization of our teacher appreciation efforts. Each year this team organizes the potluck dinners for our teachers on the evenings of the Parent-Teacher conferences (the spring conferences are in February) as well as lunches and other treats during March’s Teacher Appreciation Week.
Throughout the year we have many smaller events for which we always need extra hands to set up, clean up, or just step in to help with whatever is needed. If you are interested in helping in one of these ways (or a combination of different ones), please contact one of our Leal PTA officers listed below.
And, finally, speaking of the officers, many of us are coming to the end of our two-year term in our current roles, which means we will need new members to step into those roles for the 2015-16 school year. Getting involved in PTA events this year is a great way to discover if the PTA is something you’d like to help lead in the future!
Multicultural Arts Night Friday, November 21; 6:00 pm (Note new time!)
Leal is joining King and Prairie Elementaries, UMS, and UHS to share the cultural richness of our Urbana families in the annual Multicultural Arts Night to be held at UMS. If you or your family would like to make a cultural booth/table that reflects your heritage or a cultural that has personal meaning, or to volunteer at the event, please contact Amanda Harris [email@example.com]. Any help is greatly appreciated!

This year the Leal PTA is compiling a directory of student/parent contact information, so that families have an easier way to connect for after-school events, play dates, etc. Submitting information for the Directory is voluntary. This information will be distributed ONLY to Leal students/parents. Download a form here, or look for the forms on the PTA table at the school. Turn in completed forms to the PTA mailbox in the school office.
